Review of "The Old Oak"

"The Old Oak" is one of those "look-at-the-community-I-(the-writer/director)-grew-up-in-and-the-hard-times-we-had-with-a-town-that-is/was-falling-apart-and-falling-from-its-past-glory-days-and-now-is-not-good-at-facing-change-in-a-different-world" movies.  (I'm sorry, but I tend to see them as self-indulgent [on the part of the writer/director], and kind of wonder what the point is, other than "life is tough all over.")  It is certainly no worse than most of its ilk, and has some moments of sweetness in between the disasters.  (Heck, maybe it's *really* relevant to Port Alberni.)

Anyway, at one point we find that the central character had his father die on April 9th, and, subsequently, at a particularly low point in his life, intends to kill himself on April 9th.

April 9th is, of course, my birthday.

Maybe it's a sign?
