AI - 1.02 - history - ELIZA expert

As I have said, artificial intelligence is not a thing.  It is not a single thing.  It is a whole field, with many different approaches to the idea of getting computers to help us out with more complicated things than just adding up numbers.  So we'll go over a variety of the approaches that have been used over the years, as background before we get into genAI and LLMs.


ELIZA and chatbots

Over sixty years ago a computer scientist named Joseph Weizenbaum devised a system known as ELIZA.  This system, or one of the popular variants of it, called doctor, was based on Rogerian psychological therapy, one of the humanistic therapies.  The humanistic therapies, and particularly Rogerian, tend to get the subject under therapy to solve his or her own problems by reflecting back, to the patient, what they have said, and asking for more detail, or more clarity.  That was what ELIZA did.  If you said you were having problems with family members, the system would, fairly easily, pick out the fact that "family members" was an important issue, and would then tell you something like "Tell me more about these family members."  Many people felt that ELIZA actually did pass the Turing test, since many patients ascribed emotions, and even caring, to the program.

A great many people who used ELIZA, including staff at The institute where Weisenbaum worked, felt that ELIZA was intelligent, and actually had a personality.  Some of them considered ELIZA a friend.  The fact that such a simplistic program (the version that I worked with occupied only two pages of BASIC code) was considered intelligent is probably more a damning indictment of our ability to attend to, listen to, and care for our friends, then it is proof that we are approaching true artificial intelligence.

Other chatbots have been developed, based on simple analysis and response mechanisms, and sometimes even simpler than those underlying ELIZA.  Chatbots have been used in social media all the way back to the days of Usenet.  Yes, Virginia, there was social media before Facebook.


Expert Systems

A field in which I was able to explore some of the specialty programming languages, and programming for the artificial intelligence systems, is expert systems.  Expert systems are based on a model of, and observation of, the way that a human expert approaches a problem.  It was noted, in interviewing human experts, and determining their approach to solving problems, that they would ask a series of questions, and generally those which would be answered with a yes or no response.  In data management and representation terms, this seem to fit the model of a binary tree.  Thus, it was felt that and expert system program could be built by determining these questions, for a given field, and the order in which they should be asked.  Expert systems, therefore, owe a lot to theories of database management.

One of the observations, when building expert systems, was that, in an optimal situation, a question would only be asked once.  Therefore, there were no requirements to return to a prior question, or to repeat any kind of functions or processes.  Functional programming languages, the specialty type used for building expert systems, are therefore somewhat unique in programming languages, in that they have no loops or cycles or provisions for creating them.  The flow chart for an expert system program is therefore a drop through type.  You start at the beginning, follow the binary tree down, and come up with your answer.

Expert systems are definitely one of the success stories of artificial intelligence.  They have been very effective for diagnosis and troubleshooting.  Medical diagnosis, in a particular problem field, has been using expert systems for a number of years, and have found them extremely helpful.  They have also being useful in troubleshooting problems for certain specialized types of equipment.  In addition, programmers being programmers, examples of expert system programs exist for things like the best wine pairing for dinner.

The problem with expert systems as a candidate for artificial intelligence is that you need a separate expert system for each specialty field.  Expert systems are based on the database of questions to be asked, and the links resulting from the answers.  Individual expert system programs are highly field dependent, and there is significant difficulty in using an existing expert system program to develop an expert system in a different field.

To dream the impossible draught horse bald eagle ad ...

Recently, while idling (wasting) away time on social media, I came across what appears to be a Budweiser ad.  At some time in the past the enormous corporation that makes Budweiser and a number of other beers had, for promotional and advertising purposes, a team of Clydesdale draught horses, or cart horses, that they used to pull an old time beer wagon.  This team has been the basis of a series of advertisements for the Super Bowl football game, which have, over the years, become a bit of a Super Bowl advertising tradition.  Generally speaking it is not necessarily the team that is central to the advertisement, but possibly a single horse.  Usually the draught horse is in some kind of a relationship, generally with another animal.  The ads are miniature dramas, that may tend to take place over time, sometimes a period of years.  A common theme is friendship between the horse, and the other animal, usually with some kind of sentimental plot twist.

The video that I saw on social media followed this pattern.  A horse encounters a baby chick.  At some point the horse notes the chick cold and wet in a rainstorm, and comes, standing over the chick, to shelter it from the rain.  Eventually the chick, now somewhat larger, is riding on the back of the horse as the horse runs, and, obviously, is trying to fly even with pre-fledged wings.  At some point the chick attempts to fly, and falls off and into the mud.  Eventually, however, we see the horse galloping at full speed across a field, and, as the chick, now grown to adulthood, unfurls its wings and is, for the first time, successfully flying, it is finally revealed that the chick is, indeed, an American Eagle.  (Or, as the rest of the world calls it, a bald eagle.)

In the current heavily politicized and divisive social context of the United states, the choice of a less than detailed but extremely patriotic symbol is undoubtedly one that would appeal to advertising agencies.  It is beautiful, sentimental, patriotic, and, if you don't think about it too much, inspiring.

The thing is, while there is nothing in the production or imagery of this advertisement that would suggest it, it is rather glaringly obvious that this commercial advertisement is, almost entirely, the product of generative artificial intelligence.

As I say, there is nothing in the video, faulty imagery or the production, that would give away the artificial intelligent origin of the video.  Generative artificially intelligent video generation is now available at high quality, and is, in fact, so commonly available, and so relatively inexpensive, that I didn't initially even know whether this was an actual Budweiser ad.  It have been could be a parody by somebody else using the same Budweiser ad pattern.  (I have subsequently had some confirmation that this is, in fact, the official Budweiser Super Bowl ad for this year.)

However, it is undoubtedly true that Budweiser has been using generative artificial intelligence for their advertising in recent years.  Shooting advertising with animals is fraught with perils.  Animals do not necessarily take direction for movie dramas well.  Therefore, in order to piece together the storyline that you want, you may have to shoot an awful lot of video, and piece together the story out of what you have.

But there are a number of other indications that this particular piece of video is computer generated.

For one thing, the horse, in this particular piece of video, no longer looks particularly draught-horse-like.  Yes, draught horses do look like regular horses, just a little bit bigger.  But there are differences.  (They are subtle, and it's possible real draught horses were used.)

But it's more about the eagle.  I am not an expert on raptors, but I have had the opportunity to observe, and even care for, bald eagles in their pre-fledged state.  As they get to the point where they are about to start to grow their fledging feathers, they are enormous creatures, much larger than the supposed chick in this video.  I would expect that this part of the video would be computer generated anyways, since it might be difficult to find raptor chicks at the proper stage of growth, and it might be difficult to get a draught horse to be willing to have such a chick placed on its back anyway.

But it is the final scene which is the absolute giveaway.  Yes, bald eagles are fairly large birds, and they do have, when seen close up, a surprisingly large wingspan.  But the final scene in this video, has a very disproportionately large bald eagle appearing, particularly when we consider it in relation to the size of a proper draught horse.

(There is also the fact that bald eagles do not nest on the ground, and don't develop the white feathers on their head for at least seven years after they are fully-fledged, but nobody in Madison Avenue would know or care about that, anyway.)

As I say, initially I had no way of knowing whether this was an actual Budweiser ad, or someone else's parody.  Nothing in the video production gives the game away in regard to computer generation of the imagery.  It's really only if you know the relative sizes, and proportions, of draught horses versus regular horses and the relative proportions of both juvenile, and adult, bald eagles, that the errors in this video become apparent.

Why is this in any way significant?  Only in that it is yet another example that generative artificial intelligence is now capable of producing content which, visually, is indistinguishable from real life, but is not actually real, and could never be.

A few things to think about before we start:

IBM announced it will "let go" of 30% of its workforce by not hiring new people, to be replaced by genAI.

The companies that are successful with AI are going to be the ones that *increase* their workforce because AI is making their existing employees more productive.  If the only way that you can make more money is to fire a bunch of people, and replace them with artificial intelligence, well, I direct you to my thoughts that any friend, counselor, caregiver, or employee who *can* be replaced by artificial intelligence, *should* be replaced by artificial intelligence.  The thing is, the companies that are going to succeed are not the ones who replace their existing dull employees with a bunch of dull AI functions.  The way that generative artificial intelligence is producing material at present, it is not creative, it is not innovative, and it is not terribly useful.  Either artificial intelligence is going to make your existing employees more productive, or you are eventually going to run out of people to fire, and your company is going to go down the tubes anyways.


We constantly forget genAI isn’t human, and assign feelings and intent to the machine.

The only people likely to "fail" the Turing test in this way are those who already treat people like bots.  (And, of course, anybody who is so mechanized in their life and work that they *can* be replaced by a machine, *should* be replaced by a machine.)

One of the very strong reasons that I agreed to do this particular series is to try and fight against these perceptions that existing generative artificial intelligence systems have personalities.  As we will get into, they do not have understanding, they do not have perception, they do not have emotions, and so trying to relate to artificial intelligence as if it does have emotions is a mistake, and possibly a very dangerous one.


Chinese scientists and engineers are applying ChatGPT-like technology to sex robots, aiming to create interactive, AI-powered companions.

On the flip side of the idea that generative artificial intelligence systems have emotions, is the possibility that we, as human beings, start to relate to artificial intelligence as if it has a personality, and even to prefer to interact with artificial intelligence, rather than with other people.  If we are able to create systems and processes that are polite, friendly, patient, and various other attractive traits, and then begin to prefer dealing with our artificial workers, companions, friends, and so forth, we are in danger of losing our ability to deal with the foibles of real people.  If we lose that, we lose are actual communities.  That is possibly one of the major dangers of dealing with artificial intelligence.


The Tony Blair Institute used ChatGPT to produce a report on the effect of AI on the job market.

This may seem to be amusing, but it points out another dangerous risk.  If we start to rely on what are, at present, unreliable systems and helpers, we may start to create material for ourselves, which we come to rely on , and any existing faults or biases that are built into our existing systems, then perpetuate into material upon which we have a greater reliance.


Turing test

In terms of artificial intelligence, Alan Turing is famous for the Turing test.  The Turing test says that, when you remove some of the conditions that would normally support our identification of a person, such as their physical presence, then, when communicating through a system that removes the non-text cues, if we cannot determine whether we are interacting with a computer program or a person, then the computer program has passed the Turing test.

Turing may not have been entirely serious when he proposed this test.  It may not, in fact, be an actual test which we can use to determine whether we have created something that truly is artificially intelligent.  It may be that Turing was pointing out one of the additional fallacies with regard to artificial intelligence, by not defining what we mean by intelligence in the first place.  Do we really know what intelligence is, even with respect to ourselves?

One of the things that I have noticed since coming to Port Alberni is that the place is very insular.  Small towns tend to be insular, but in Port Alberni the groups in Port Alberni are insular from each other.

The churches don't support each other.  The city ended support for the Sunshine Club a while ago.  The city has reduced its support for its own Community Policing.  The city ended support for the Chamber of Commerce.  The city ended support for the SPCA.

Now the Chamber of Commerce has ended support for McLean Mill, the major tourist attraction in town.

Come to Port Alberni and watch the place collapse into huddles around you ...

Sermon 70 - Superstitious Religion


Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly before your God.


I paid my way through university partly by nursing.  I worked in a hospital for a few years.  All the staff in the hospital, and particularly those in the emergency ward, knew, for an absolute fact, that people went crazy on the night of the full moon.  On the night of the full moon, all kinds of people did all kinds of weird things, and got themselves into trouble, and ended up in the emergency ward.

As I say, I was working my way through university.  And one of the courses that I took was in statistics.  I was interested to discover that there had been quite a number of studies that had been done on this issue of the full moon.  And that every single one of the studies had determined exactly the same thing: there was absolutely no truth to the common perception that people went crazy on the night of the full moon.

As a matter of fact, this belief that everyone goes crazy on the night of the full moon is so deeply embedded into our culture that it is odd that, when you actually look at the statistics and the numbers, there isn't even a blip in regard to full moon nights.  This belief is so deeply ingrained in our society that you would expect that some people would let themselves go a little crazy on the night of the full moon, expecting to be forgiven for any weirdness because of that cultural belief.  But no, there isn't even a blip in the statistics around the night of the full moon.

So, why do so many hospital staff, and so many police officers, and so many people who work in emergency services, so strongly believe that people go crazy on the night of the full moon?

Well, there is a kind of observational bias that is at play here.  If you work in an emergency ward, and you have a night where everything is going crazy, and you finally get five minutes to get yourself a breath of fresh air, and you walk out and look up into the night sky, and there is a full moon, you say to yourself, oh, of course.  And that reinforces the belief.  If the night is crazy and you go and look up into the sky and there is no full moon, you don't think anything of it.  And on normal nights, when there is a full moon, you don't have any particular reason to pay attention to the full moon, and so that doesn't affect the belief either.

One of the other areas of study that I pursued was in psychology.  Behavior modification was a pretty big deal at the time, and we knew that there were studies that confirmed how subjects form superstitions.  If you gave random reinforcement to a subject, the subjects would associate the reward with whatever behavior that they had happened to be doing just before the reward appeared, and that behavior would be strengthened, and would occur more frequently.  Because it would occur more frequently, when the next random reward happened, that behavior would likely have occurred recently, and so, once again, that behavior would be reinforced and become more frequent.  In animal studies it was amazing how random reinforcement, presented over a few hours or a few days, would result in the most outrageous obsessive behavior on the part of the subjects.

This is, basically, how we form new superstitions.  This is, basically, why sports celebrities have such weird superstitions.  Whether they have a particularly good game, or winning streak, is, by and large, going to be random.  But anything that they happen to notice that they did, just before or during that game, they are more likely to do again.  Therefore they are more likely to do it on a future date when, again, they have a good game or win an important game.  This is why athletes tend to have lucky socks, or lucky shirts, or lucky rituals.  It's developed in the same way.

One of the other fields I worked and researched was, of course, information technology, and the subset known as artificial intelligence.  Artificial intelligence is not, despite the current frenzy over generative artificial intelligence and large language models, a single entity, but rather a variety of approaches to the attempt to get computers to behave more intelligently, and become more useful in helping us with our tasks.  One of the many fields of artificial intelligence is that of neural networks.  This is based on a theory of how the brain works, that was proposed about eighty years ago, and, almost immediately, was found to be, at best, incomplete.  The theory of neural networks though, did seem to present some interesting and useful approaches to trying to build artificial intelligence.  As a biological or psychological model of the brain itself, it is now known to be sometimes woefully misleading.  And one of the things that researchers found, when building computerized artificial intelligence models based on neural networks, was that neural networks are subject to the same type of superstitious learning to which we fall prey.  Neural networks work by finding relations between facts or events, and, every time this relation is seen, the relation in the artificial intelligence model is strengthened.  So it works in a way that's very similar to behavior modification, and leads, frequently, to the same superstitious behaviors.

The new generative artificial intelligence systems based on large language model are, basically, built on a variation of the old neural networks theory.  So it is completely unsurprising to see one of the big problems that we find with generative artificial intelligence, is that it tends, when we ask it for research, to present complete fictions to us as established fact.  When such a system presents us with a very questionable piece of research, and we ask it to justify the basis of this research, it will sometimes make up entirely fictional citations in order to support the proposal presented.  This has become known as a "hallucination."

Calling these events "hallucinations" is misleading.  Saying "hallucination" gives the impression that we think that there is an error in either perception or understanding.  In actual fact, generative artificial intelligence has no understanding, at all, of what it is telling us.  What is really going on here is that we have built a large language model, by feeding a system that is based on a neural network model a huge amount of text.  We have asked the model to go through the text, find relationships, and build a statistical model of how to generate this kind of text.  Because these systems can be forced to parrot back intellectual property that has been fed into them, in ways that are very problematic in terms of copyright law, we do, fairly often, get a somewhat reasonable, if very pedestrian, correct answer to a question.  But, because of the superstitious learning that has always plagued neural networks, sometimes the systems find relationships that don't really relate to anything.  Buried deep in the hugely complex statistical model that the large language models are built on, are unknown traps that can be sprung by a particular stream of text that we feed into the generative artificial intelligence as a prompt.  So it's not that the genAI is lying to us, because it's only statistically creating a stream of text based on the statistical model that it has built with other text.  It doesn't know what is true, or not true.

There is a joke, in the information technology industry, that asks what is the difference between a used car salesman, and a computer salesman.  The answer is that he used car salesman knows when he is lying to you.  The implication of course (and, in my five decades of working in the field I have found it is very true), is that computer salesman really don't know anything about the products that they are selling.  They really don't know when they are lying to you.  Generative artificial intelligence is basically the same.

Okay, well, I'll give you a break, and stop talking about superstition and artificial intelligence for a moment, and talk about the name of God.  I'm sure that you'll feel much more comfortable with that.

Actually, I'm going to talk about the *names* of God.

In the middle of an otherwise unremarkable comedy movie, there is a brilliant scene that shows a family dinner.  In order to start the dinner, with a grace for the food, the scene develops into a hilarious debate over whether they should thank the tiny-little-baby-Jesus-who-was-born-in-a-manger-in-Bethlehem for the food, or the Lord-Jesus-who-was-crucified-on-the-cross.

The joke is funny because we know that the tiny-little-baby-Jesus-who-was-born-in-a-manger-in-Bethlehem and the Lord-Jesus-who-was-crucified-on-the-cross are the same Jesus.  Arguing about which name or description is absurd.

Or is it?  The joke falls a little flat, because there are a number of people who, seriously, worry about making sure that they invoke the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit an equal number of times when they are praying.

And there are some of you, reading or listening to this, who think that I am overstating the case.  But I assure you, that I am not.  I have, here in town, at some of the churches, been warned against "that other church," and warned that I should not attend "that other church" because at "that other church" they do not pray to the name of Jesus.  Now, there are a few problems with this.  One is that it is false.  I have attended "that other church," and they do, indeed, pray to the name of Jesus.  So, the report is false in the first place.  The other problem is that we, ourselves, in trying to either make or justify this argument, risk falling into a similar joke, where we envisage Jesus, looking down from heaven, and nudging the Holy Spirit in his non-existent ribs, and saying hey, look, I got five billion more prayers to my name, than you got to yours!

We are in danger of building superstitions on to our religion.

Jesus warned the Pharisees about this.  He noted that their religion was the religion of men, not of God.  In one example, he noted that they made sure that they tithed garden spices.

Now you were, of course, supposed to tithe.  When you got your huge pile of wheat out of your fields, or tubs and baskets of olives from your grove of olive trees, you were supposed to tithe in order to support the Levites, who were given none of the promised land as their own farmland, and also to support the widows and orphans and foreigners in the land.  But Jesus points out that the Pharisees are obeying the letter of the law, and not really the spirit of the law.  They were taking lots of time to separate out one tenth of the spices in their garden, to flavor their foods, and not going around and checking on their neighbors to make sure that nobody was in want of actual sustenance.

And this isn't an Old Testament versus New Testament thing, either.  A lot of the prophets in the Old Testament came with messages from God, with God saying I hate and despise the religious feasts, which I instituted for you, and which you are doing in the wrong way.  And, in particular, he sent Micah to tell them that he had already shown them what they were supposed to do: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly before their God.

Jesus was simply repeating what the prophets had already been telling them, for hundreds of years.  This is what is really important.  Having a proper relationship with God, and doing what he wants you to do, which is actually the best thing for you to do, for you, as well.

But, no.  We keep on trying to load our superstitions on top of, and even often in place of, the true and proper relationship with God that we are supposed to have.  The guys who were tithing dill and cumin, and the guys who are counting up the number of times that they pray to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, are all doing this same thing.  Creating a human superstition, and putting it in front of actual Christianity.

They are trying to hack God.

They think that there is some minimalist action that they can take that will compel God to give them a bunch of stuff that they want, and will force God not to ask them for anything else.

This is such a weird concept that I have trouble actually believing that some people believe in it.

I have written a sermon about hackers before.  I won't go into all the details of that here, but I will, once again, reiterate that a hacker is somebody who is able to use a certain technology in ways that other people can't, and sometimes in ways that people never considered possible.

And I find it hard to believe that anybody considers it possible to hack God.  For one thing, God is God.  God is the ultimate reality.  How do you, a created creature, have the unmitigated gall to try and force God to do what you want, rather than what He has ordained?  It's sort of like a lump of clay saying to a potter that the potter should have made him into a water pitcher, rather than a fruit bowl.  (Oh, wait...)

But maybe these people don't even get that far in thinking about what they're doing.  Maybe these people just see religion as transactional, rather than a relationship with God.  We really can't blame them.  After all, our very word, religion, comes from the Latin word for it, religio, and the Romans had a very transactional idea of religion.  The Roman idea of religion was about deal making.  If you read the religious inscriptions of the Romans, they read like contracts.  The population of the town of so and so, will give to the gods, A, B, and C, so many goats, and so many bulls, and so many pigs in sacrifice if, at the end of one year's time, the town of so and so has maintained their level of prosperity, and are all relatively healthy.  Signed, the priest for the town of so and so.

And, of course, a lot of us still think that way.  Religion is transactional.  This is the idea of the prosperity gospel.  This is a deal between God and us.  We do basically some of the things that God says for us to do, and then God will ensure that we stay healthy and wealthy.  Of course, if anything bad happens, then you have to say that the person to whom the bad thing happened either has some undisclosed sin, or doesn't have enough faith, or some other idiotic idea like that, in order to explain why bad things happen.  You see, it's a deal.  Bad things don't happen to good people.

And, of course, the prosperity gospel is a superstition just like any other.  God didn't promise us a transaction.  God created us to enjoy him forever.  In a relationship.

The Adolescence of AI

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, seems to have put the cat among the generatively artificially intelligent pigeons.  In his blog he has written a 19,000 word essay entitled "The Adolescence of Technology."

Within hours of hearing about this posting, I had already come across to references to it in the news media: one in the Guardian, and another in The Atlantic Monthly.  Both had predictably overblown headlines.  The general implication was that Anthropic had gone off its rocker, and we were all facing the AI apocalypse (presumably by Singularity).

In fact, if you read the actual essay, rather than the news reports about it, it is a reasonable piece of thinking, if not writing, and it is heartening to see that the CEO of a large language model company would be considering these issues.  Even at 19,000 words (the size of a small novella more than an essay) the article is not quite comprehensive, and there are a few topics that I wish he had considered.  But it is heartening to know that he sees that there are risks, and risks beyond the mere existence of the technology, and the risks of concentration of wealth quite apart from the technology.  I do think that he is more optimistic about the potential outcomes then is actually warranted by the current situation, and I strongly suspect that he is also optimistic about the time frame for actually achieving a realistic artificial intelligence, but that is only to be expected from someone who leads a major artificial intelligence company.  I do think that he is just a wee bit glib about the specific protections that Anthropic has, itself, put into place in order to prevent its incipient artificial intelligences from escaping or doing us harm. But that's probably a matter of opinion anyway, and, again, voicing other opinions might get him in trouble with stockholders.

I would recommend that anyone who is interested, one way or another, in artificial intelligence, and particularly generative artificial intelligence, to read the actual essay as opposed to the news reports about it.


(Given both the title and the topic, I can't help but wonder whether Amodei has read "The Adolescence of P-1.")

So, why me?  Well, for one thing, I was asked.  I am a teacher, so I know how to design courses and material to provide what people need to know, rather than just a whole bunch of random facts that might be related to the topic.  Also, I'm a writer, so I know how to write.

I am old, and therefore crotchety and curmudgeonly.  In addition, I am bereaved, and a depressive.  That means that I am an unhappy person, and therefore unlikely to be swayed by any promotional puff pieces by those who want to promote the artificial intelligence industry.  I test things.  To destruction, if necessary.  I have no problem with pointing out problems.

However, I also know what I'm talking about.  I have looked at at least one version of the programming code for ELIZA.  I have studied functional languages, the programming languages used to create expert systems.  I know about neural nets, and the weaknesses that that model of the brain has.  I know about a number of the problems in setting up programs for genetic programming.  While I am not an expert in the field, I know the different approaches to artificial intelligence, and that artificial intelligence is not a singular thing.

I have been learning, programming, supporting, testing, teaching, troubleshooting, securing, and researching computers, communications, and information technology for over five decades.  I have taught about the field on six continents.  I was on the Internet before it was called the Internet, when only about a thousand people were on it.  I understand the field very deeply, and can take a box of transistors and build a working computer.  I understand the implications of the technology: what it can do, and what it cannot do.  Because I understand it at such a foundational level, I can understand the dangers and implications of a new technology, such as quantum computing, and generative artificial intelligence, very quickly.  I also understand people, social engineering, human factors engineering, and how people and technology interoperate.

Given the complexity of the hopes and fears that people have about artificial intelligence, quite apart from any objective realities of what the field actually doesn't is, I suppose that my personal beliefs also come into this.

It certainly would be nice to have a reliable friend, who would never be exasperated at being asked to listen to, and supportively critique, our ideas, thoughts, beliefs, or opinions.  It would be nice to have someone who was smart enough to assist us with our work, but would not necessarily be a challenge, in terms of stealing our ideas and running away with them.  So, I understand the hopes that people have about artificial intelligence.  It would be nice to have someone, or something, who could reliably be counted upon to assist us with all kinds of mundane tasks that we don't want to have to bother with ourselves.

But I know what the realities are.  This hope has been around since ancient times, when one of the gods had a kind of mechanical owl as a friend or helper.  It has certainly been around ever since we had machines that would do some addition for us.  And, pretty much for exactly that long, the idea was that we would have some kind of artificial intelligence resulting from our computers, certainly within the next ten years.

We have believed that for eighty years now.

So, I am not holding my breath.  Someone once said about artificial intelligence that, when we try to make machines that learn, it turns out that they don't, and we do.  So, yes, the attempt to create artificial intelligence has taught us an awful lot, and continues to teach us an awful lot.  Sometimes more about psychology, than it does about computers.

There are also a great many fears about artificial intelligence.  There are always those who are afraid of anything that is not us, and they are, very often, terrified of the possibility that the machines will rise up and kill us.  We have created many works of fiction, both books and movies, that express this fear.  I think that this particular fear is just as unlikely as the possibility that, within the next ten years, we will have helpful and reliable artificial friends readily available to us.

At the moment, what I see as the greatest risk and danger to us, from artificial intelligence, is that, in our desperation for reliable artificial helpers, we will come to rely on imperfect, unreliable, and just plain bad tools that the artificial intelligence industry chooses to foist upon us.  We are already seeing AI slop flooding social media; wasting our time, and really giving us neither entertainment nor education in return.  I fear that we will see the same type of production infiltrating all aspects of our lives, and flooding out and depriving us of thought, consideration, value, and actual fact.

At any rate, I have been asked to help warn you, all of you, about what the real risks are, and the reality of what you might be able to expect, and probably should never expect.

Oh, you guys want a bio?  Recently, when I was doing a presentation on AI, the group wanted one, too.  So I thought it appropriate to ask the chatbots to do that for me.  This is a compilation of what they came up with:

AI - 0.02 - intro - why

Computers run our lives.  Even if you don't know about them, and even if you don't use them, computers run our lives.  You can, if you make extensive efforts, deliberately take yourself off the grid, and refuse to have any interaction with them.  But if you do that, you probably don't have any interaction with most of the rest of the human population.  So, while it's up to you, it's not really very realistic to try and avoid them all together.

Artificial intelligence doesn't run our lives; at least not quite yet.  As a matter of fact, I strongly suspect that artificial intelligence doesn't really run much of anything, at least not quite yet.  But, increasingly, artificial intelligence is going to have a significant effect and influence on you.  A lot of very large businesses, and most of the large giant tech businesses that increasingly *do* run our lives, are very, very keen on this idea of artificial intelligence.  They are promoting it, and governments are promoting it, and a lot of the world economies are promoting it, because a number of extremely expensive companies have been, very quickly, built to enormous levels of capital investment, on the basis of the idea and hope of artificial intelligence.

And, at this point, I have to make, rather earlier than I wanted to, the point that artificial intelligence is not a thing.  At least, artificial intelligence is not *one* thing.  Artificial intelligence is many things.  The term artificial intelligence covers a whole range of approaches to the idea of getting machines that will help us do our thinking.  The latest of these is what is more properly known as generative artificial intelligence (or genAI, for short) as produced by the large language model approach.  This is the technology behind a number of chatbots that are available to most people, even though most people, given the choice, are surprisingly afraid of interacting with them.  It is also part of the technology, and a large part of the technology, behind the systems producing visual graphics, and even videos, with very little effort on the part of those who are requesting them.  But I don't want to get too deeply into what this technology is, and how it works, and how it different differs from the other approaches to artificial intelligence, at least not quite yet.  I just want to make the point that there is a difference, and that it really isn't completely correct to call these new technologies simply artificial intelligence.

However, since the media, and the general public, and pretty much everybody is just simply referring to artificial intelligence, when what they really mean is generative artificial intelligence, I'm not going to fight that battle here.  I will, in this series, primarily be talking about generative artificial intelligence, and I will, frequently, just say artificial intelligence, or even just AI, when I'm talking about it, because everyone else does.

From my perspective, and I will get into the details of why somewhat later, generative artificial intelligence is, currently, a solution in search of a problem.  I know that many claims are being made for the wonders of what artificial intelligence can do.  But when you look at the reality of what they actually *do* do, particularly the chatbots and the image creators that generative artificial intelligence is currently supporting, you'll find that the results are, while sometimes quite surprising, not all that useful.  When you try and get an artificial intelligence system to produce a business plan for you, or create an app for you, or produce an advertising graphic for you, very often you have to put as much work into getting the system to produce something for you as you would to produce what it is that you want yourself.

But, while I think that generative artificial intelligence has a long way to go before they really get to the point of fulfilling an awful lot of the promises that are being made about them, the fact that an awful lot of people believe in the promises is having an impact on you.  It means that the companies running the technology that runs your lives are, increasingly, integrating generative artificial intelligence tools in every possible process and product that they run or provide.  This means that, even if you, yourself, don't want to interact with artificial intelligence, and don't want your products to rely on artificial intelligence, and don't really want to be involved in artificial intelligence in any way, you have less and less choice in the matter.  The big guys with the big money are buying into artificial intelligence as fast as they can, and this is bound to have an effect on you.

One of the effects could be financial.  So much money is being invested in artificial intelligence companies, and research, and products, that it is affecting stock markets and corporate capitalization.  If the promise of generative artificial intelligence isn't fulfilled, soon, that effect on the stock market, which is currently financially positive, is going to burst.  This is known as a stock market bubble, and bubbles burst.  It may be that generative artificial intelligence can improve fast enough that the stock markets will accept the growth, regardless of how slow it is, and keep on supporting the capitalization of these companies.  But bubbles are unstable.  And, if they burst, with the current capitalization of these artificial intelligence related companies, and the pressures on financial the negative pressures on financial markets then exists from a variety of other factors in our world, it could have a very significant impact on your finances.  Possibly on your job, possibly on your retirement plan, if the plan has invested heavily in artificial intelligence companies.  This isn't a guarantee, of course: absolutely nothing in the stock market is ever guaranteed.  But it is something to think about and pay attention to.

As with anything to do with the global economy, the effects are complex and the outcomes uncertain.  Possibly the massive overinvestment in AI companies is diverting money better spent elsewhere.  Possibly the massive investment if propping up stock markets in a situation where other pressures might be making it tank.  And possibly the research into genAI will actually result in valuable discoveries in other fields.  But dangers are there as well.

There are other effects of the current frenzy for artificial intelligence.  As I say, artificial intelligence tools are being Incorporated in all kinds of computer processes, and computers, as I said right at the beginning, run your world.  This is why I am writing this series of postings and articles.  I am trying to ensure that those of you who do take an interest, can get some information about what generative artificial intelligence really is, and isn't, what it can do for you, and what dangers it holds for you, as well.

There is a meme going around the Internet that shows a still frame from the now very old movie, "2001: A Space Odyssey."  The meme notes that the movie is very prescient, given that it shows people, eating prepared and reheated meals, sitting at tables, but, even though they are sitting next to each other, not interacting with each other, but rather working, or interacting with conversations on flat rectangular portable screens.  The meme also goes on to say that, shortly after this scene takes place, the artificially intelligent computer goes crazy, and kills everyone.

That isn't the only danger with artificial intelligence, and it's not even the most likely danger involving artificial intelligence.  But there are dangers, real dangers, that come with using artificial intelligence.  It's a good idea to know what artificial intelligence is, how it works, and what the dangers are, if you are going to use artificial intelligence in the best way, and avoid the worst problems.

Whenever I am at a party, or an event, or any large gathering involving multiple rooms, I always wonder why human beings are so attracted to doorways.  We always stand in the doorway.  Maybe it's because of our FOMO: fear of missing out.  We can't decide which room we want to be in, so we stand in the doorway, so that we can look this way, or that, and see whether something more interesting is happening in the other room.

Okay, you say, interesting, but what does this have to do with Ruth?  Well, Boaz, as was indicated in the last sermon, immediately sets out to ensure that Ruth is married, and that it is done properly.  So he goes to the city gate.  Apparently, we are just as enamored of gateways, as we are with doorways.  So, if you want to find the important people of the city, you go to the city gate.  There the important people of the city are sitting around, wondering when somebody is going to get around to inventing coffee.

Boaz finds the guy who has the better claim than he does in the guardian redeemer scheme of things.  He also finds ten of the leading citizens of the city.  For some reason, even this early, Jews have decided to do things by tens.  You have ten people for a jury, you have ten people to make an important decision, you have ten people on the city council, for all we know.  And for an important issue such as property rights, you have to have ten witnesses.

It's interesting the different emphasis, or importance, that different cultures place on witnesses.  In our society, we tend to say that a witness is pretty important.  In court, witness testimony is supposedly the most important testimony of all the other types of evidence.  From studies both in law and in psychology I can tell you that witness testimony is really shaky.  But, we seem to assert that witnesses are important.

Actually, we don't.  Not, that is, in comparison to other cultures.  The Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation, or language group, that is prevalent here in Port Alberni, have a very high regard for witnesses.  In any important event, or meeting, the First Nation will actually hire (possibly for a token payment, but hire), witnesses to the event.  They have the responsibility for remembering, and possibly later reporting, on what happened.  If there are no witnesses, it didn't happen.

The Jewish culture of 1500 BC was definitely similar.  We see this even in the language.  There is the commandment that we tend to read as, don't lie.  But the actual meaning is much closer to the King James version: thou shalt not bear false witness.  This refers to witness testimony in court.  You are not to give incorrect witness testimony.  It has a much more legalistic, and much stronger, emphasis then we tend to think of it as.

So, Boaz gets witnesses.  This makes things official.  This makes things real.

And he lays it all out to the other guardian redeemer.  You have the right to buy the plot of land that belonged to our relative, Elimelek.  Do you want to buy it?  If you don't buy it, says Boaz, I will.  The other guardian redeemer says that he will.  Boaz brings up the point that, as soon as he buys that plot of land, he has to marry Ruth, so as to perpetuate the family line of the relative, Elimelek.  The other guardian redeemer changes his mind.  Given that he is perpetuating Elimelek's family line, that might jeopardize his own legacy.  You do it, he says.  And Boaz does.  He legalizes it, in the presence of witnesses, making everybody sure of what he has done, what he intends, and that this is all right and proper.

I really feel for Boaz, at this point.  Boaz is getting married late in life. I married Gloria rather late in life.  Boaz does not know what he is getting into.  He thinks he knows, but he really doesn't.  I know this, because I thought I knew what I was getting into when I got married, and I very definitely didn't.  Marriage is hard work.  Your life changes, a lot.  In a sense, there is a kind of grieving that goes on, when you get married, that is oddly similar to the kind of grieving that you go through when your spouse dies.  Now, an awful lot of the changes that go on, when you get married, are good.  As a matter of fact, fantastically good.  And no, I'm not just talking about the obvious.  I would never have published, all the books that I published, if I had not married Gloria.  When I married Gloria, I had no idea that this would be one of the results.  So, I know, for an absolute fact, that Boaz has no idea how his life is going to change.

For one thing, his mother-in-law is moving in with them.  I'm pretty certain that that's how it worked in this culture.  We really aren't told too much about what happens at this point, other than that a child is born, and that, eventually, Boaz and Ruth become David's great-grandparents.  I would really love to believe that they all lived happily ever after.  There isn't any thing to say that that didn't happen, but there isn't anything specific to say that it did.  I hope it did.  I see this as a terrific love story, and I'd really hate to think that it wasn't.  After all, we know that Boaz is a really decent guy, and we know that Ruth was terrifically committed to her mother-in-law.  They are both really good people, and so, it pretty much stands to reason that they will have a good marriage.  Possibly even a great marriage.  Everybody seems to see this as a good thing, particularly around the birth of the son, Obed.  Everybody showers blessings on them, and even Tamar (remember Tamar?) gets a mention, again.

Following up on some random conversations about generative artificial intelligence (or genAI, the current hot topic in the *much* wider field of artificial intelligence or AI) over the years, a friend recently noted that not only are the tech giant corporations doing their best to force us into participating in genAI, whether we want to or not, but that the government, which should be keeping an eye on this development with a view to protecting us from possible dangers, is, rather, jumping wholeheartedly on the genAI bandwagon, and desperately promoting any and all genAI businesses that pop up.

And asked a deceptively simple question: What can *we* do about AI?

As a teacher and a researcher, my immediate response is, of course, education.  Learn about it.  Teach yourself about it.  Get some free accounts on various generative artificial intelligence systems.  Play with them.  (Carefully.)  Ask them questions.  Judge the responses.

(Of course, the tech giants are trying to sneak genAI at you any way they can, and you have to watch out for that, but I'm working on it.)

He also noted that we should advocate for "the right to opt out."  This is probably the big one.  This is what you should be advocating for, and bringing up, every chance you get, in any conversation, so that people know that this is something that they should be paying attention to and striving towards.  But, of course, to be effective in this, and not just be dismissed as a crank, you also have to educate yourself.

So, as a teacher and a researcher, and one who has decades of experience in the field of information technology, and at least knows that AI is not *one* thing, but many, I probably have a bit of responsibility here.  I have written about genAI in recent years, and probably need to do more.

So, as a first step, I have gone back over some of my writings and postings over the past few years to try and identify, collect, and organize some of what I've *already* written about AI.  And this is a kind of table of contents (similar to that for grief topics), pulling together and semi-organizing what exists.

Then I can get on with filling in some of the blanks ...

Ruth 3:1-4

One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, "My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for.  Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours.  Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.  Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes.  Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.  When he lies down, note the place where he is lying.  Then go and uncover his feet and lie down.  He will tell you what to do."


And now we come to the really problematic part of the book and series.  Here, in chapter three, we have Naomi counseling Ruth to seduce Boaz, in order to trap him into a marriage.

Okay, maybe that's overstating it a bit, but that's certainly the way that it looks.  But let's break it down a bit.

First of all, Ruth has been very kind to, and supportive of, Naomi.  How on earth can Naomi repay any of this?  Well, she can take some thought to Ruth's future.  And Ruth's future is pretty bleak.  The Israelites are possibly not noted for their hospitality to foreigners, even though God keeps telling them to be kind to foreigners, because at one time they *were* foreigners.  So the Israelites are even commanded not to get too close to the foreigners.  Not to intermarry with them.  So Ruth, in a patriarchal society where there really is no place for the women, except as wives, may be in for a world of hurt when Naomi dies.  When Naomi dies, Ruth has basically no claim on the Israelite community at all.

So Naomi is probably correct in terms of thinking that getting Ruth married is possibly the most important thing that she, Naomi, can do for Ruth.  And we've already got a candidate.  Here is Boaz.  He is wealthy, and, from all indications, he's a pretty good guy.  He has treated Ruth more kindly than he needed to during the period of the harvest.  It seems to have a relation to one of the main themes of "Pride and Prejudice," by Jane Austen: when you have responsibility for daughters, what is more important than getting husbands for them?

We might question Naomi's plan, but, really, can you come up with a better one?

Naomi explains to Ruth about the harvest.  At the end of the harvest, when you have harvested, dried, and threshed all the grain, you have this enormous pile of the grain that is going to keep you over the next year.  It is the harvest festival.  It is the time of thanksgiving.  This is the time of gratitude for the fact that God has provided for you for the next year.  There is going to be a party.  Probably all the harvesters are going to be there.  I'm not sure about the women who are helping to clean up after the harvest.  Obviously there's going to be feasting.  And, as Naomi mentions, there's going to be an awful lot of drinking.  And as the party winds down, the people involved in the harvest, and particularly Boaz, are going to be sleeping there, turning in for the night, and sleeping beside this huge pile of grain which represents their security for the next year.  And they're probably going to be plastered.

It's pretty clear, from the instructions that Naomi gives Ruth, what she intends to happen.  Ruth is to wash and make herself up, wear perfume, and put on nice clothes.  She is not to participate in the party: she probably isn't invited.  But, as the party is winding down, she is to take note of where Boaz beds himself down beside the pile of grain.  And when he's asleep, she is to go and snuggle into bed with him.  I mean, this wording about uncovering his feet is pretty strange, but it's pretty clear what the implication is here.

Naomi is pretty sure that Boaz is going to wake up, be physically intimate with Ruth, and then, the next morning, feel guilty enough about it that he's going to have to marry her.  And then Ruth will be married and secure.

Well, Ruth goes along with this plan.  But, apparently, Boaz doesn't.  He wakes up in the middle of the night, and there's Ruth, basically in bed with him.  But he doesn't proceed in the way that Naomi seems to have foreseen.  Or, then again, maybe Naomi *did* foresee this.

Anyway, he realizes what is happening.  He realizes that Ruth is making a play for him.  And, as a matter of fact, he's pretty grateful for it.  Like I said, one of the reasons that we know that Boaz is older, is because he tells us so.  He says that he is grateful that Ruth has not gone after a younger man, in her search for husband.

He also doesn't sleep with her.  As a matter of fact, he takes great care with Ruth's reputation.  He gets up, before it's light, and makes sure that she is on the way home before anybody realizes that she has even been there.  But first he tells her that he will make sure that she is married.  He knows that he has the right of redemption of the property, and he also knows that along with the right of redemption comes the responsibility to marry Ruth.  He also knows that there is one person who has a closer claim than he does.  So he tells Ruth this, and tells her that he will make sure that this is addressed.

So, Ruth is off home, and reports all this to Naomi.  And Naomi seems to know Boaz pretty well.  She tells Ruth not to worry: the situation is going to be resolved, and resolved quickly.  Boaz will not rest until he puts things right, and does it the right way.

Boaz is going to do it by the book.  He isn't going to sleep with Ruth on the threshing floor, and then have a hurry-up marriage to cover things up.  As a matter of fact, he's not even going to get engaged to Ruth at all, at least, not right away.  There is somebody else who has a greater claim, and Boaz, as much as he may want to, and there are indications that he wants to, is not going to jump the line.  He is going to do it properly.  He is going to do the right thing, but he's also going to do the right thing in the right way.

As I have mentioned before, I hate soft keyboards on phones, and I tend to use Gboard for dictating to my phone when creating pretty much anything.

Gboard is not perfect. Today, however, it seems to be particularly glitchy, and is creating messes out of the simplest text that I dictate into it.

When we start talking about data communications, we have to talk about timing again.  Timing seems to show up an awful lot, in terms of computers, doesn't it?  Well, yes it does.  And here we are again.

If you study into the details of data communication ..., well, I know you won't.  Very few people do.  You use it absolutely every single day, but almost nobody, even those who do go into studying information technology quite extensively, goes into the details of data communications.  If you do, you quickly run into this issue of timing.  As a matter of fact, when you start out, with the basics, you will probably run into terms like synchronous communications, bi-synchronous communications, and asynchronous communications.  Synchronous, and bi-synchronous, communications were the originals.  When people started to do data communications, this issue of timing was so important that there was actually a timing signal over the communications channel.  And you could only send a packet of data immediately after the timing signal had pinged down the line.  Bi-synchronous just meant that the timing signal was sent in both directions.  Asynchronous doesn't mean that timing is not involved: definitely not.  It just means that you didn't have to wait for a specific timing signal: you could start communicating anytime you wanted to.

There is another pair of terms that you might hear when you start talking about data communications.  This is serial, and parallel.

You might not hear these terms being used, an awful lot, these days.  They used to be very important, a while ago.  They generally referred to the connections, almost always by cables, that you made with the peripherals that you attached to your computer.  Serial means that the information was sent one bit at a time, in a stream of bits.  And, when we talked about data communications today, this is, most often, the type of communication that we are talking about. 

Parallel communications sends a number of bits, all at once.  Back in the days when serial communication was problematic, and noisy, and slow, using parallel communication was a way of speeding things up.  Obviously, it is difficult to send a number of hits, together,  along a single wire.  Signalling happens by changing the signal, from off to on, or high volume to low volume, or high frequency to low frequency.  When this change happens, you can only send one bit of information with it.  Parallel communication used to have ribbon cables, where a number of wires were packaged together, side by side, in a plastic ribbon.  (Each wire carried one signal, in the same way as the serial communications.)  You don't see this as much anymore, and it was mostly short range anyway.

However, parallel data communication may start to have a comeback sometime soon.  A lot of people are experimenting with various forms of quantum networking and communication.  Quantum entities can carry more than one bit of information, and so it may be possible to create parallel communication technologies, once again.  (Actually, there is a form of data communications called quadrature amplitude phase shift keying that uses a combination of high and low frequencies, and volumes, and other changes that can carry up to seven bits of data at a time, but that's getting a bit advanced for now.)

Recently, somebody asked me what was the difference between wifi and the Internet.  This is a fairly common question. Wifi is one of the various short-range communications technologies that you use to connect to the much wider and larger network known as the Internet.  Internetworking, or just internet, with a lowercase i, used to be a technical term to describe what you needed to do to connect two devices that used different communications technologies, or were made by different manufacturers, since pretty much every manufacturer had invented their own communications protocols.  However, once people really started to build communications networks between computers which were all made by different manufacturers, we needed internetworking on a very large scale.  And there were formal attempts to ensure that all computers could talk to pretty much any other computer.  This, and the links between all of those computers, became the Internet, with a capital i.  The Internet is this large scale network that connects pretty much every computer to every other computer, all around the world.

That may not explain very much, quite yet.  And we're going to go into some further details.  But before I do, I want to introduce something that became very important in ensuring that we could connect every computer to every other computer.  This is the OSI model.

OSI is the international organization for standards. (Yes, I know, the three letter acronym doesn't seem to match the name.  That actually involves politics, and we don't need to get into it right now.  As a matter of fact, for my part, I'd be glad *never* to get into it.  It's *much* more complicated than computer are or were.)  Anyway, these are the people who make sure that technology has standards, so that when one person says that this device is a standard what's it, the other person knows what particular functions this what's it has.  And, of course, they were very involved with the protocols and standards to ensure that computers could communicate with each other.

(Of course, this resulted in a completely new set of standards.  The nice thing about computer standards is that there are so many of them.  And if you don't like any of the ones that we have now, just wait until next year, when there will be a whole bunch of new ones.)

The one really good thing that came out of all of this was the OSI model.  When we were talking about programming and software, we talked about layers: layers of hardware, layers of operating systems, layers of utilities, and layers of other types of software.  The OSI model is based on layers.  It has seven layers, that divide aspects of data communications into specific functional areas.  If you stick with these layers, and ensure that the layer you make can talk to the layer below you, and you can talk to the layer above you, you can create your own communications technologies and protocols, and it will work with pretty much everything else.

There are seven layers to the model.  Everybody has their own favorite mnemonic to remember the names of the different layers.  My personal favorite it is Please Do Not Take Sales Person’s Advice.  This allows me to remember that the actual layers of the OSI model are Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.

We are going to go through at least the first three layers of the model.  It turns out that the OSI model is not only good for building new communications technologies and protocols, but it also makes a really great way to separate the functions, and therefore, it gives a nice structure for teaching about how data communications work.

Sermon 67 - Ruth 2



Ruth 2:2

And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor."

Leviticus 19:9
When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.


Naomi and Ruth return to Naomi's home, in Bethlehem.  They are in straightened circumstances.  They have no way to make money.  Ruth suggests to Naomi that she, Ruth, go into the fields and pick up leftover grain.

This is a reference to a very interesting command that God has given in the law.  God says not to reap the harvest right to the edge of the field, or to go back and pick up anything that you dropped when you harvested the field.  As a matter of fact, this specific command is given not just once in the law, but twice in Leviticus, and then, again, in Deuteronomy there is an interesting reference to the fact that anybody who is walking in your field is allowed to pluck individual grain that is growing in your field, as long as they don't actually cut the growing grain stalks.

Most people say, in interpreting these types of commands (and there are additional commands about not beating branches of olive trees twice, that seem to amount to the same thing), that this is an early version of social welfare that God is setting up for the poor among his people.  After all, in one of the mentions in Leviticus, it specifically says to leave them for the poor and for foreigners.

But I think that these commands, and certain other references, go further than that.  When I first started to run across these kinds of references, when reading the Old Testament, what struck me was that God doesn't seem very interested in efficiency.  When you are harvesting a field of grain, it would probably be more efficient to reap right to the edges of the field.  And, in harvesting up all that grain, it would probably be more efficient to go back over the field and pick up anything that you have left behind.  God doesn't really seem to care about efficiency.

At least, not in the way that we perceive efficiency.  If you get to know how God has created the world, you start to find all kinds of really complicated ways to do things, that are built into God's creation.  Yes, it's interesting.  Sometimes it's really beautiful, but efficient?  No, definitely not in the way that we think efficiency is important.

But then, you start to learn even more about creation, and how the natural world works, and you realize that God has reasons for many of the very complicated ways that the natural world works.  And that they are a lot better then the ways we think the world should work.

But let's get back to this thing about efficiency. Yes, when mentioning wheat and olive trees, there are mentions of the poor and foreigners.  But then there are some other commands that don't seem to have anything to do with simply leaving grain behind for people to pick up.  There is, for example, the sabbatical year.

Every seven years, you are supposed to not plant your fields.  You are not supposed to do any work.  You are not supposed to plant, and you are not supposed to harvest.  You are supposed to use up what God has given you in the preceding six years.  Not only that, if anybody owes you any money, you are supposed to forgive the debt.  If you hold a mortgage on anybody's property, you are supposed to forgive the debt.

That's not very efficient.  It's not an efficient way to run a business.  How can you run a business if, every few years, you are supposed to just forgive the debt of anybody who hasn't paid you what they owe you!  I mean, how can you run a capitalist system with that kind of ridiculous requirement?  It's not efficient!

Capitalism is very big on efficiency.  As a matter of fact, an awful lot of the businesses, the really, really big businesses that we have these days, run on efficiency.  They have found ways to shave this, and trim that, and outsource this type of work to somebody else, so that they can be just one or two or three percent more efficient than other businesses.  And that's how they got to be so big.  Capitalism is a way of making sure that you make the most possible money out of any situation.  And it works really well.  It makes sure that some people make a lot of money, and that creates wealth.  And there's nothing wrong with wealth is there?

Well, see, there's that point that Jesus made, one time, that you are either going to serve God, or you are going to serve money.  And there was that first commandment, in the ten commandments, that you should have no other gods before God.  And, right now, there are an awful lot of people in our society, and even an awful lot of people in our Christian churches, who feel that there is nothing wrong with money, and God never said that there was anything specifically wrong with money, and money is really useful.  Even the churches need money.  And, really, it's better to rely on having money in your bank account than it is to rely on God.

Think about that.

Capitalism is our new God. 

Capitalism is our new false idol. 

And while you're thinking about that, think about all the times that God said that you don't *need* to be efficient with your harvesting, because I am going to give you so much that you won't need it.

Who are you going to trust: God, or money?

But we seem to have drifted pretty far from Ruth.  Ruth is out in the field, picking up after the harvesters.  Ruth's work is not very efficient.  She is picking up leftover stalks of grain.  Individual stalks, lying on the ground.  She has to bend over and pick each one up.  She has to carry them with her, as she goes through the field picking them up.  After all, it's not her field.  If she puts a bundle of the stalks of grain down someplace, the people who are harvesting the field have every right to believe that it's their bundle, and come along and take it.  Then, when she gets too tired from all this stoop labor picking up individual stalks of grain, she probably needs to find some place to beat the stalks of grain, and separate out the actual grain seeds, which are, after all, the part that you want to eat.  (The straw from stalks of wheat has pretty much no nutritional value.)  When she gets home, she's going to have to spread all the wheat seeds out, all over again, because, in order to store them for any length of time, you have to make sure that they are dry enough so that they won't either sprout, or get moldy.  It's not very efficient.

Boaz's operation is probably much more efficient.  He has, either as part of his household, or has hired, harvesters.  The scythe probably hasn't been invented yet, but they have sickles to cut down the standing grain.  Then he has a group of women, once again, either from his own household, or hired, to pick up the cut stalks of grain, and tie them into bundles or sheaves.  These sheaves are probably left standing in the field for a few days, so that so that the bundles of grain on the tops of the sheaves will dry out, and the grain will be dry enough, when they do the actual threshing, to be ready to store for the rest of the year.

Boaz has a fairly big operation.  It really seems like Boaz is pretty rich.  He has enough money not only to hire harvesters and extra staff, but he's hired enough extra staff that he needs to have an overseer for the whole operation.

And, when Boaz comes out to see how the harvest is going, he asks about this lone woman, who is not part of his harvesting crew.  And the overseer reports that the woman has asked permission, and is being a hard worker, and that this is the woman who came back from away with Naomi.

And we get the first strong indication that Boaz is a really decent guy.  He goes and talks to Ruth.  He doesn't have to.  This isn't somebody who is a part of his household, and it's not one of his workers.  But he tells Ruth to glean in his field during the harvest.  He tells her how to identify which fields are his, and tells her to follow along after his female employees, so that she is safer.  He informs Ruth that he has talked to his harvesting employees, and that they are not to harass her, which must be a significant danger when you are a single, lone woman, during a mass harvesting operation in widespread fields.  He even tells her that she has permission going to go and drink from the water that is provided for his workers.

He tells her that he is aware of what she has done for Naomi.  He knows that she has left her people, to accompany and support Naomi.

He says, May the Lord repay you for what you have done.  May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.

At lunch time, he makes sure that she comes, sits down, and gives her bread, and roasted grain, and even some condiments for her lunch.  Separately, he instructs his employees not to harass her, not even to shoo her away if she starts harvesting too close to the standing sheaves.  He even tells his people not to be too efficient in gathering up the sheaves: in fact to pull some stalks of wheat out to leave for her to glean.

Ruth's returns home to Naomi, at the end of the day, with at least thirty pounds of wheat. This is a heavy burden to carry home, but it is also obviously a good deal more than you would normally expect to gather from the inefficient stoop labor of gathering up leftover cut grain.  She has some leftovers from her lunch.  That's probably what they have for dinner that night.  Naomi asks where she worked, and Ruth explains.  Naomi tells Ruth to stick with Boaz, and introduces this concept of the guardian redeemer, which will become more important in chapter four.

So, after the disaster of chapter one, we get a little glimmer of hope in chapter two.  And it's nice to close chapter two with a vision of Naomi and Ruth having a hopeful conversation, and a nicer dinner than they expected to have.

Boaz is going home to a bigger house, with more things around him, and with storerooms, or probably out buildings, because he seems rich enough, which guarantee that he's going to be able to have meals for some time to come.  After all, he is running an efficient operation, and, from the facts we are given about his employees, his female employees and, and even the fact that he needs an overseer to manage all of this, Boaz is wealthy.  And there's nothing wrong with that.  We also have indications that Boaz, for all his wealth, is a nice guy who is looking out for other people.  But he's going home to eat dinner alone.

Ruth and Naomi are not wealthy.  Wherever they are living, it's probably one room.  After they have dinner, they are going to have to move away everything that they set up to have dinner, so they can spread out their bedding, to have a place to sleep tonight.  But they are together, and talking over the events of the day.  They are eating a dinner, probably better than they expected, that has been provided by the hand of God.  Just for that day.  There is a little extra food around, the harvest of the grain, but they will have to spend some time spreading that out and drying it, because they don't have any guarantee of how much more they are going to get.  God has provided this dinner, and they are relying on God to provide for the future.

I know which dinner I'd rather be at.
